A great and cost effective way to increase the value of your home is a bathroom remodel. It can also go a long way toward improving the quality of your life and satisfaction in your home. You’ve made the decision to remodel your bathroom, now what? It makes total sense that a lot of people find the idea of taking on a bathroom remodel quite intimidating.
Plan, plan, and plan some more! Prepare to feel a myriad of emotions about starting a bathroom remodel including: scary, exciting, and nerve racking, but it is all worth it in the end! And a well thought out (but, flexible) plan will keep things moving and ensure that you are always one step ahead of the game. Here are nine tips and tricks to help you get started.
1. How long do you have to complete your remodel?
When does this project have to be finished by? Do you have another bathroom in your home to use or are you staying with a friend? This is important to think out all of the ways so that you can decide what parts of the remodeling project you can realistically do yourself and what parts you will need to hire out.
2. Make a list of what will be done in your bathroom remodel.
New tiling? Lighting? Fixtures? Moving walls? Cabinets? Are adding another sink? A stand alone shower? Are you gonna save anything, like the toilet?
3. What’s your inspiration?
Start a bathroom remodels Pinterest board and collect ideas that you love. Do you want a drop-in tub? Do you love subway tile? Grout color? Different grout color for walls and floor? What about vanity lights? Stare at tons of pictures and really think about exactly what you love about that image.
4. How much can you afford to spend on your remodel?
Also realize things come up in bathroom remodels, so give yourself some wiggle room.
5. Know how to find help.
Do you need someone to move plumbing? Add lighting? Do you feel comfortable tiling yourself? Countertops? Glass enclosure for the shower?
6. Do you need to special order anything?
If you need to special order your sink, tub, or shower faucets, realize that this can hold up the installation a few days. Also, counters and glass shower enclosures take a time to order and install. As long as you are thinking ahead, special orders won’t be a big deal.
7. Keep the little details in mind!
Where do you want outlets? Where do you need lights? How high do you want the lights? One or two mirrors? Where do the light switches go? Where will towel bars hang? Cabinet hardware? Do you want a built-in shower and/or bathtub shelf? It’s nice to be able to tell the electrician and plumber ahead of time exactly where you want these things to go.
8. Here’s how to pick out tiles and fixtures.
Go to a store and look at the materials in person. Keep your Pinterest inspiration pictures in mind, and take pictures on your phone of what you like in the store. Include prices in the pictures for easy reference later. Also, remember things like smaller tiles equals more grout, which equals a less slippery floor, which was a huge decision maker for our floor tile choice.
9. It’s just a bathroom. Don’t stress yourself out too much.
Everything is going to be A-OK, I promise. In the end, you’re going to have a brand spankin’ new bathroom to enjoy and admire for as long as you live in your house! If you’re thinking about starting a bathroom remodel project, do it! It will be awesome. If you’ve already made the decision to remodel, congrats! Now, plan, plan, plan!
